Good news: Wonderful book….French is so easy to read! First few pages were backstory of Hong Kong’s history and followed closely what I found on wikipedia. Luckily Joseph Hessel is now showing the reader sides of HK that I knew nothing about! Good choice of book for #WorldFromMyArmchair challenge.
Bad news: Unfortunately this is one of Kessel’s books that is only available in French. But there are more of his books that have been translated. I urge you to try one…his writing is excellent!
Personal: It has been a busy week…visiting Hong Kong and Macao! I’ve learned about the early history of Hong Kong…about the powerful British merchants Matheson & Jardine and the opium trade that made them millions! I walked the hills of Kowloon City, visited “Rennie Mills” and looked wide eyed at the inside of opium dens and gambling houses. This is a fascinating look at this part of the world in 1955 and Joseph Kessel knows how to guide you with his words!
