Review: Why We Sleep
Good news: I finally learned what REALLY happen to us when we sleep. Fascinating!
Bad news: There were several chapters that were less interesting, but that is personal.
The book is structured so you can dip into any chapter and discover new things about ZZzzzz.
Personal: You won’t believe it ….but true. After reading this book I clocked in 2 solid nights of 9,5 hours of sleep! How did that happen? Well, just learning about what happens and why in our bodies during sleep was enlightening. I followed some of the author’s “golden tips” for a good night and they worked! Most important tip was: NO IPAD or LAPTOP reading after 8PM…only print books. It is true if you use an IPAD/LAPTOP 2 hours prior to bed…it blocks 23 % of the rising levels of melatonin that helps us fall asleep.

Well done, great to hear, I’ve been swearing by print books to aid sleep for years, they’re sophorific!
I have expressly bought print books the last 4 weeks. I find I need pages with margins to write down new French words. I have a bio about film and play director Mike Nichols (…remember his movie The Graduate?) on bedside table along with The New Yorker magazines (…reading short stories from TNY for #DealMeIn challenge. IPAD was so easy to gather many books at your fingertips…but just during morning and afternoon.
This sounds like a very good book. One of the reasons I don’t read ebooks much is because I cannot read them at night, and that is when I like to read. I know for sure they interfere with my sleep.
You are absolutely right….! I was a late night IPAD/LAPTOP addict. Hours before sleeping I would scan the laptopIPAD for news and reading etc. I experienced one or two good nights sleep in the week… and the rest were nights I couldn’t fall asleep until 2-3 am! I figured the 2 good nights were due to pure sleep deficit. So something had to change. It isn’t easy to turn off elek devices at 8 PM…and I have books ready to read. Third night report: solid 8,5 hrs shut-eye!
Glad to hear you’re getting better sleep Nancy. Not enough sleep affects absolutely everything from mood, health, attention span, energy levels etc. So well done for doing something positive about it.
I forgot to mention…I’ve stopped drinking coffee. This has been really hard to do. I’ve had caffeine headaches for the past 7 days. I have to rearrange my day b/c I have only limited time on laptop so NOT wasting too much time on Twitter…just check-in a a few favorite accounts. Reading French with an online dictionary is much easier the the old fashioned print book. So I try to keep evening reading to my English books/The New Yorker. I am going to try and squeeze a movie on the laptop this afternoon. You never realise how much time is spent on electronic devices. My laptop time was down 39% last week! Time to start next French book….asap@!
Good luck!
